Climate-KIC start-up Cohere enables 30% faster charging for Tesla taxis at Schiphol Airport

Smart charging of charge points enables the electric taxis of SchipholTaxi at the Dutch national airport to charge 30% faster.

Because electric taxis often use a combination of “DC” fast-chargers and regular “AC” chargepoints at charging stops it is crucial to divide the electric power.

Climate-KIC start-up Cohere has developed a smart charging system together with Delft University of Technology, which has now been placed at SchipholTaxi by construction company BAM.

SchipholTaxi is the first to apply the Cohere developed smart charging system, which ensures that four fast chargers and 20 regular charging points are balanced optimally. The 96 electric taxis can now manage to do the same amount of daily cab rides as diesel taxis.

Airport only allows electric taxis

Since the beginning of this year only electric taxis are allowed to drive from Climate-KIC partner Schiphol Airport.

That is a major change, which also bears consequences for the charging infrastructure. After all, electric taxis have to be recharged as soon as possible.

“Our chauffeurs often drive more than 300 km every single day. That requires more than one charging session, because we work with minimum range. That’s why we mainly use the fast chargers by day and in between shifts and at night the regular chargers,” says Gamis el Bouakili, director of SchipholTaxi.

Serious infrastructure

The four fast chargers – 60 kW a piece – and 20 normal chargers – 22 kW a piece – demand a lot of power. One complete transformer substation would be needed to supply all those charging stations of power at the same time.

Without Cohere’s smart charging technology the only other option would be to use an industrial transformer, but the costs would have been enormous.

Charging smarter

In the quest for a better solution construction company BAM Infra and Cohere have joined forces. Whenever the fast chargers are fully operational, the regular AC chargers are automatically adjusted.

This way the placement of an industrial transformer could be prevented and the EV-Box charge points can charge up to 30% faster when the 60kW chargers are not in use.

It is a solution that saved thousands of euros. “Our customers are very happy with the electric cab drives. Thus, for us it is of great importance that we drive as much as possible and charge less. I think we were able to handle this in a smart manner,” said El Bouakili.
